UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF CROATIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

JUNE 26 - JULY 23, 2010

The University School of Croatian Language and Culture offers an intensive course of the Croatian language. The School is offered to persons of Croatian background, as well as to any student who want to learn (more) about the Croatian language and culture. In addition to the academic programme, students visit museums, galleries, theatre productions, see the sights of Zagreb, take a study trips, etc. The cultural programme is organised by the Croatian Heritage Foundation and it is relevant to lessons and classwork.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

The four week academic program comprises of 110 hours. This includes 95 hours of obligatory classes and 15 hours of facultative classes. Classes are scheduled Mondays to Fridays, five hours per day. One “class hour” equals 45 minutes. The programme is held in student campus “Cvjetno naselje”.

Levels

The Croatian language course is offered at three broad levels each further divided into narrower levels: beginners (P1, P2, P3), intermediate (S1, S2, S3) and advanced N1, N2, N3). Those nine levels may have sublevels, sets of milestones with finer differentiation (e.g. P1.1, P1.2). The advantage of such branching approach is that they provide visible progress of students and yet still relate back to a common system (Common Reference Level, Council of Europe 2001). Students are advised to use European Language Portfolio (with appropriate levels A1-C2).

Depending on the number of participants (no more than 12 students per classroom) and their knowledge*, it is possible to organise classes in more groups of the same sublevel. Hence, the number of groups does not necessarily have to be equal to the number of subevels.

The classes are adjusted to the students’ knowledge and interests and therefore the teaching approach for beginners is different from the approach intended for students with linguistic interest, e.g. slavicist.

Daily there are 5 compulsory language classes:

- 3 practising different language skills

(listening, speaking, writing, reading)

- 2 grammar practice

Additional classes (1-2/day) may be organised in the afternoon. They are aimed at reinforcing certain areas of Croatian (pronunciation, reading, conversation, grammar etc.). The classes are adjusted to the needs and interests of the participants who choose them according to their teachers’ suggestions.

Classification of students

When the application is processed and the deposit paid, participants receive a questionnaire and a short Croatian test via e-mail. Filled-out questionnaires and tests should be returned no later than May 30, 2010.

Depending on the test results, a short essay and an interview with the teachers, the appropriate level for each student is determined. Students write an essay and have the interview at their first meeting, on Saturday, June 26, 2010.

Students' obligations

Students are expected to fulfil all classroom tasks (regular attendance, writing homework, working on project tasks). Students are also expected to get books and manuals according to their teachers’ recommendations.

The final exam consists of two parts: a written (essay, communication test, grammar test) and oral exam (prepared speech and conversation with teachers).

The written part is scheduled for Thursday, July 22, 2010, and the oral one for Friday, July 23, 2010.

Students will receive a diploma from the University School of Croatian Language and Culture and a grade based on their achievement. The grade report provides a Croatian grade (5-2) with its American (A+, A, A- etc.) equivalent. They get 8 ECTS for it. Students who have not passed all exams will not be eligible to receive diploma. They will receive the Certificate of Attendance instead.

Diploma will be delivered in a ceremonial event scheduled for the evening on Friday, July 23, 2010.
