The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb is the only faculty of its kind in Croatia. It was established in 1898 as the University’s fourth faculty. At that time, it operated as the Forestry Academy within what was then the Faculty of Philosophy.
With its long-standing tradition and high-quality programmes, it soon became the leader among higher education educational and scientific forestry institutions in this part of Europe, and one of the leading forestry faculties in Europe.
Today, the Faculty of Forestry consists of the Department of Forestry and the Department of Wood Technology. These include 11 institutes, 5 training and research forest centres and 2 hunting grounds.
To date, 6,600 students have completed undergraduate studies at the Faculty, 350 students have completed a post-graduate master's programme, and 200 students have completed the post-graduate doctoral programme.
Through its scientific research work, the Faculty is associated with various corporate entities, ministries, agencies, etc. and with many European and other universities, faculties, institutions and agencies through various forms of international cooperation.
The Faculty of Forestry offers three undergraduate study programmes: Forestry; Urban Forestry, Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection, and Wood Technology. The programmes have duration of 3 years (6 semesters; 180 ECTS credits).
The Faculty organizes three graduate study programmes: 1. Forestry, with two specializations, a. Silviculture, Forest Management, and Wildlife Management, and b. Forestry Techniques, Technology and Management; 2. Urban Forestry, Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection; 3. Wood Technology, with two specializations, a. Design of Wood Products, and b. Wood Technology Processes. These programmes have duration of 2 years (4 semesters; 120 ECTS credits).
At all programme levels, students participate in classes in newly equipped classrooms and laboratories, and at the training and research forest centres.
Field classes enable students to acquire practical knowledge, and are held at the Faculty's 5 centres. These are distributed among all the important climatic zone forest communities in Croatia, of which the Faculty is particularly proud.
Students completing the Master's of Forestry programme acquire the necessary knowledge for employment in complex companies that manage state forests, in agencies and offices that manage private forests, in state ministries having a forestry component in their structures, in county and municipal offices for agriculture and forestry, in forest institutes, etc.
Students completing the Master's of Urban Forestry programme find employment in national and nature parks, horticulture companies, state agencies and offices for environmental protection and conservation, state ministries having an environmental protection and nature conservation component in their structures, county and municipal offices for environmental protection and conservation, etc.
Students completing the Master's of Wood Technology programme, in the Design of Wood Products and Wood Technology Processes specializations, are competent to find employment not only in companies in the wood processing industry, but also in companies and institutions dealing with design, architecture and construction. The acquired knowledge can also be applied in state ministries, agencies and inspection services that include wood use and processing in their structures.
Research is conducted in two fundamental scientific areas: forestry and wood technology. Scientific research work, in the framework of both domestic and international scientific projects, is characterised by the high international standards of quality. Research is carried out in newly equipped laboratories, most of which are authorized, and at the training and research forest centres. Research results are published in international and domestic journals. The Faculty publishes 3 scientific journals and 1 scientific/professional journal.
