Past & Present - Brief Insight 

The University of Zagreb (1669) is the oldest and biggest university in South-Eastern Europe. It is a comprehensive public university located in the capital of Croatia - Zagreb. Ever since its foundation the University has been continually growing and developing and now consists of 29 faculties, 3 art academies and the Centre for Croatian Studies.
With its study programmes and over 50,000 full-time undergratuate and postgraduate students the University is the strongest teaching institution in Croatia. It offers a wide range of academic degree courses leading to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees in the following fields: Arts, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Engineering, Humanities, Natural and Social Sciences.
It is also a strongly research-oriented institution, contributing with over 50% to the total research output of the country.

Rector: ALEKSA BJELIŠ Ph.D., Full Professor at the Faculty of Science; elected according to the 1994 Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education for the tenure office in duration of 4 years (2006 – 2010). In 2010 reelected for a second mandate.

Senate

It is the advisory and supervisory body comprising of 12 members.
Rector’s Collegium
It is the University management body. It functions at two levels: upper (rectors and vice-rectors) and extended (including representatives of each Area Council and one student).

The mission of the University is based on scientific and artistic research and aims at sustainable development, artistic creativity and professional work as well as organization and performance of university studies and, exceptionally, occupational studies.
 
As a central and leading institution, the University gives special regard to carrying out the programmes of strategic interest for the Republic of Croatia and for the development of regional and local communities. All university activities enhance the development of personality and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Centre for Advanced Academic Studies (CAAS) Dubrovnik
Centre for Advanced Academic Studies - Dubrovnik (CAAS) is a detached unit of the University of Zagreb founded with the following aims:

  • to facilitate and promote all forms of post-graduate studies
  • to facilitate and promote academic activities in various fields of science and advanced education in forms of specialized courses, summer schools, conferences, brainstorming meetings and other similar academic activities
  • to maintain and strengthen the international academic frameworks which bring together experts in various fields; in addition, special attention is to be given to the underrepresented areas of interest and appropriate programmes are to be established when needed
  • to induce timely exposure of young scientists, beginners in various fields and university teachers to the cutting edge of respected subjects, leading them immediately into the very focus of the latest academic achievements
  • to facilitate the processes through which the national academic comes into the focus of international interest
  • to establish relevant credited courses that attract students at various levels of degree-aimed education
  • to boost a competitive academic spirit which can bridge and harmonize various inherited approaches of the European university tradition
  • to stimulate continuous higher education and lifelong learning as a reliable force of social cohesion.
CAAS offers the following working facilities and equipment:
  • conference hall with equipment for simultaneous translation, sound system and possibility of audio recording
  • lecture rooms with supporting technical devices and assistance library
  • computer room
  • coffee shop
CAAS´ students can be accommodated in the new dormitory that consists of 38 single and double rooms (each with bathroom, air conditioning, phone and Internet).

University Computing Centre (Srce) 
The University Computing Centre (Sveučilišni računski centar - SRCE) was founded by the University of Zagreb and it is the leading institution in the Republic of Croatia for the development and promotion of information sciences. The basic activity of SRCE is computational and information technology (IT) that support colleges, universities and research centres. It also includes design, set-up and maintenance of CARNet, the Croatian Academic and Research Network for the needs of the Croatian academic community.
Students of the University of Zagreb can follow courses on the use of Internet, MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, web-page design, PowerPoint, Access and Unix for free.

Student Centres 
The Student Centres of the University of Zagreb are responsible for providing meals and accommodation to students, as well as for assisting students in finding temporary and part-time employment. The Student Centre in Zagreb is the traditional meeting point of cultural professionals (ITD Theatre, SC Art Gallery, MM Centre, SC Cinema, Music Salon, SC Club) and amateur groups. During the academic year it offers various other services and facilities such as libraries, foreign language courses, computer courses, as well as entertainment, tourism and sports activities.

National and University Library
The National and University Library (Nacionalna i sveučilišna knjižnica) functions as an independent organisation. It is the main library for students at the University of Zagreb and it is located near the city centre. The library’s shelves include 2.5 million issues of 3,500 periodical titles, an online database and other information sources (online, CD ROM, microfilm, microfiche and conventional data units). All faculties and /or departments of the University of Zagreb have their own libraries as well.
